Scarlett Johansson was asked about her previous public support for director Woody Allen in a new interview
The actress said in 2019 that she "would work with" Allen again despite allegations that he sexually abused daughter Dylan Farrow when she was a child
"You never know what the domino effect is, exactly," Johansson said, when asked if her career was impacted by her friendship with the director
Scarlett Johanssson is standing by her public support for Woody Allen.
In a new interview with the U.K.'s The Telegraph published Saturday, Nov. 29, the Jurassic World Rebirth actress, 41, said, “I guess it’s hard to know," when asked if she received any consequences for publicly voicing support for Allen, 90, in a 2019 interview with The Hollywood Reporter.
"You never know what the domino effect is, exactly," said Johansson, who is promoting her directorial debut Eleanor the Great. "But my mom always encouraged me to be myself, [to see] that it’s important to have integrity, and stand up for what you believe in."
Allen has been a controversial figure in Hollywood in recent years due to longstanding allegations made by his daughter Dylan Farrow, now 40. She alleged in a New York Times open letter in 2014 that Allen molested her as a child during his relationship with her mom Mia Farrow.
Allen has denied the allegations, which were first reported during his explosive 1992 breakup from Mia, now 80. The director was never charged, though a Connecticut prosecutor once said there was probable cause for a criminal case.

Johansson worked with Allen on three movies released between 2005 and 2008: Match Point, Scoop and Vicky Cristina Barcelona.
“How do I feel about Woody Allen?” Johansson told THR in a 2019 interview. "I love Woody. I believe him, and I would work with him anytime.”
While Johansson spoke with The Telegraph, more than six years removed from sharing her support for Allen with THR, she added: "At the same time, I think it’s also important to know when it’s not your turn. I don’t mean that you should silence yourself. I mean sometimes it’s just not your time. And that’s something I’ve understood more as I’ve matured.”
A number of celebrities publicly vowed never to work with Allen again as Dylan's allegations resurfaced in the wake of the #MeToo movement. Anjelica Huston, Alan Alda and Javier Bardem have maintained their support for the writer-director.

In that 2019 interview with THR, Johansson said she and Allen "have had a lot of conversations" about the allegations.
"I have been very direct with him, and he’s very direct with me. He maintains his innocence, and I believe him," she said at the time.
In February 2021, Allen and his wife Soon-Yi Previn issued a statement slamming the HBO docuseries Allen v. Farrow, which featured Mia and Dylan speaking about their allegations.
In September 2025, Allen told The Wall Street Journal he "would think [people] would have more common sense, when they read about the situation," in reference to those who choose not to work with him or associate with him over Dylan's allegations.
"What surprises me always is how ready and willing people are to embrace it," Allen added. "I would think someone reading the details would think, ‘That’s a little dicey looking to me.’ ”
