Mendes' Riverdale costar Lili Reinhart shared on E! The Rundown that she was so "terrified" of spoiling the surprise proposal and engagement party that she ignored Mendes for "weeks"

"It happened, and I was like, 'Thank God, no one ruined it.' It was so wonderful, and I was crying a lot," Reinhart said

Lili Reinhart wasn't the one to pop the question to Camila Mendes, but she was just as nervous about her Riverdale costar's engagement as her now-fiancé, Rudy Mancuso.

After Mancuso, 33, proposed to Mendes, 31, on Oct. 24, the bride-to-be was surprised with a star-studded engagement party at Caribbean restaurant Lucia in Los Angeles. During Reinhart's recent appearance on E! The Rundown, the actress, 29, opened up about her Mendes' emotional celebration and the nerve-wracking weeks before the big moment.

"I couldn't talk to her for weeks leading up to it," Reinhart said.

The Look Both Ways star was so "terrified" of spoiling the surprise that she ignored her longtime friend — whom she starred alongside on Riverdale for seven seasons from 2017 to 2023 — over text and in person to ensure no slip-ups.

"I was like, 'I can't talk to her,' " Reinhart explained. "Every person I texted about it, I stared at their name for five minutes to make sure I wasn't accidentally texting her. She asked to get dinner with me in New York, I'm like, 'Can't, busy. Sorry, can't see you.' Because there's no way that I'd be able to talk to her. No, I was terrified."

Luckily, the surprise proposal went off without a hitch.

"It happened, and I was like, 'Thank God, no one ruined it.' It was so wonderful, and I was crying a lot," Reinhart said.

Reflecting on the surprise engagement party — which was attended by many celebrities, including Riverdale alums Madelaine Petsch and KJ Apa — Reinhart told Entertainment Tonight at the 2025 Governors Awards on Nov. 16 that she was "so excited" and "very, very happy" for Mendes.

"I'm so glad that we're all still in each other's lives and get to have these, like, big life moments together," she said. "It's really special."

At the time of the proposal, a source revealed to PEOPLE how Mancuso pulled off the surprise.

“She thought she was going to a birthday party for producing partner Rachel Matthews, but it was a surprise engagement party instead,” the insider told PEOPLE. “Rudy proposed to her in front of their family and friends.”

And the celebrations didn't end there. “Around 11 p.m., they were still celebrating, so they went to Glen Powell’s tracksuit and tequila-themed birthday party,” the source added.

Mendes described her proposal as the "best surprise ever" on Instagram, sharing 12 photos from the special night. "Thank you to all our loved ones who came out to celebrate this milestone with us," she added in the caption.
