In an interview with PEOPLE, the Twin Peaks actor and What Are We Even Doing? podcast host chats about his gift-giving hack, his family traditions, holiday dressing and more

If you're thinking, "What is Kyle MacLachlan even doing this holiday season?" well, he's ready to dish all of his festive plans. That, of course, includes thinking ahead about gift-giving.

The Sex & the City and Twin Peaks actor, 66, tells PEOPLE that he's a bit of a "perfectionist" about buying meaningful presents for his loved ones, which means he ends up being "terrible" at actually picking something out. "But I've learned that if I start early enough, it's helpful," he says.

This year, MacLachlan got way ahead of the game with Nordstrom, a brand that reminds him of growing up in Yakima, Wash. In the retailer's new Oh, What Fun! holiday campaign, MacLachlan takes his costars Atsuko Okatsuka, Caleb Hearon and Recho Omondi (who are all podcasters like MacLachlan) on the ultimate gift-shopping experience, reminding us viewers that buying presents this time of year can be part of the fun with a great curation of goodies set at the right prices.

While MacLachlan has fond memories of shopping at Nordstrom, he also remembers what it felt like to get his dream present, a bicycle, as a kid. Even now, he says his wife, Desiree Gruber, "always spoils" him with gifts, many of which are fashion-forward. "It's always a couple of really nice shirts. She has much better taste than I do," he admits.

That doesn't stop him from embracing a little "silliness" or trying an experimental look, much like his and Gruber's 17-year-old, Callum.

"It's filtered down to my son, who also has a sense of humor with his fashion," MacLachlan says of his sense of style. "Certainly, for festive days, whether it's Christmas, Fourth of July, or whatever, he leans into it with his wardrobe." Fashion isn't the only thing they bond over.

Around this time of year, the father-son duo pick out their family's Christmas tree no matter where they are, whether it's Los Angeles or New York. They also indulge in an Advent calendar of Legos.

As the year draws to a close, MacLachlan is looking forward to the exciting moments in his life. For one, season 2 of his Amazon Prime Video series Fallout will drop on Dec. 17. He's also preparing to return to the Overcompensating set. And even amid all of that, he's set on climbing the "big mountain" that is his podcast, What Are We Even Doing?.

MacLachlan launched the project, created by Gruber's Full Picture Productions, in September with Kaia Gerber. He's since sat down with everyone from Dylan O'Brien and Benito Skinner to Rachel Sennott and Noah Beck with one goal: to really get to know what Gen Z and younger millennials are all about. His dream guests? Timothée Chalamet, Jacob Elordi and yes, Charli xcx ("She's just such a sweetheart," he says).

"I have this opportunity to speak with the new, young creators that are coming. They're just kind of breaking out and doing really interesting things. To talk about them and learn about what they're up to, it's keeping me current for sure."
